About Our Beautiful Beaches

SAND -- The Emerald Coast beaches are recognized as among the most beautiful beaches in the world.  According to the Walton County Tourist Development Council, it's all about geography.  The sand along the beach is a brilliant shade of white because it is composed mainly of pure quartz crystal, unlike anywhere else in the world.  Its powdery grains are extremely fine due to the enormous distance they traveled to reach their destination.  Particles of quartz, once part of the southern Appalachian Mountains, were washed over millions of years into riverbeds and transported by the river to the Gulf.  The ebb and flow of the water over this long distance broke down these particles and buffed the edges making them as fine as sugar.
WATER -- The waters of the Gulf of Mexico are so clear because no large, sediment-heavy rivers directly influence the water, according to tourism officials.  The water coming out of the Apalachicola River, is filtered through the estuary of Apalachicola Bay.  The emerald-green hue of the water comes from its purity.  The shallowness of the Gulf and the translucent water coupled with the high reflectivity of light off the sugar-white sand create the emerald-green color.
